Many businesses are learning that if they run their equipment in a more ‘energy-efficient and energy saving’ way their energy bills will become lower and the business as a whole will save more money on bills, which can result in a larger profit margin or cheaper services/products being offered to their customers.

In this article we discuss some top energy saving tips for your workplace to help your business become more energy-efficient, to lower your energy costs and to improve your company’s carbon footprint.

  • Make tea for the whole office – boiling a whole kettle and only making one cup of tea is a gross waste of energy.
  • Turn off machines that are not in use, don’t leave them on standby over the weekend or even overnight. Some machines have ‘sleep’ options where they turn off after a set time of inactivity – use these settings to help your office become more energy efficient.
  • Change the light bulbs for LED Light bulbs; you can save around £60 a year per light bulb that you change from an ordinary light bulb to an LED Light bulb. Imagine the savings the can make in your office!
  • Look at the equipment in your office and ensure that all machines have the USEPA (Energy Star) standard activated, it is important to remember that most machines have it but sometimes they are set up with the option ‘disabled’ in place.
  • Keeping your machines in good working order will help ensure the energy efficiency of them, ensure they are regularly monitored and looked after.
  • Screen Savers may look great but it is far more energy-efficient to use the ‘power down’ option if available. It is recommended that you encourage your staff to switch off their computers when they know they will be away from their computers for a certain amount of time.
  • It would be ‘stating the obvious’ but many companies don’t do it – switch off machines overnight, request that the last person to leave each night checks everything is turned off while checking windows and doors are closed.
  • Compressed Air Tools use ten times more energy than power tools powered by electricity so if you need to use tools in the office opt for the electricity powered tools to save energy.

Small changes like these in the everyday running of your business will help lower the overall energy bills, making a noticeable difference in the total costs required from your energy suppliers.
